光催化剂是1967年日本本多健一和藤岛昭两位学者发现的，随着1999年纳米技术的突破性进展，光催化剂的活性问题也得到解决。已研究的光触媒材料有TiO2、ZnO、Cds、WO3、Fe2O3，PbS、SnO3、In2O3、ZnS、SrTiO3和SiO2等十几种，其中以纳米TiO₂为代表，具有价廉、耐酸碱腐蚀、***、催化能力强、稳定性好、不会产生二次污染的特性，是良好的空气净化材料。
特定波段紫外照射下光触媒生成的氢氧自由基的氧化能约140 kcal/mol、高活性氧负离子的氧化能高达120kcal/mol，远大于有机物或其它物质分子内部原子间结合的键能，故其能氧化分解甲醛。
