1、润滑油基础油。矿物基础油应该选用加氢裂化、加氢精制和加氢重整、或采用异构脱蜡工艺所生产的基础油，以及使用合成基础油。
2、添加剂。添加剂技术对于润滑油生产商来说，属于核心技术，完全决定着润滑油的使用性能和使用寿命，一般不会少于八种。常用润滑油添加剂有清净分散剂、抗氧抗腐剂、极压抗磨剂、油性剂和摩擦改进剂、抗氧剂和金属减活剂、黏度指数改进剂、抗泡沫剂、抗乳化剂、降凝剂、防锈剂、复合添加剂。由于添加剂的品种很多，至于使用那种，使用多少那就要看生产者的了。
3、润滑油性能指标，包括物理指标和化学指标。一般来说，高品质的润滑油，必须具备:高的黏度指数、闪点高、凝点低、抗乳化性、抗泡沫性、抗氧化性、抗摩擦性，以及橡胶兼容性都要好，而且色相要好，无刺激性气味。
